1861 THE WEST PHILADELPHIA PASSENGER RAILWAY COMPANY - Incorporated (in 1857) in the State of Pennsylvania - Scarce stock certificate issued one month before the start of the Civil War. Issued to William M. Swain for 50 shares worth $50 each. $2,500 would have been quite an investment in the 1860s! Vignette shows a horse-drawn street car. A similar design is included in the corporate seal as well. Pen cancelled. Printed by D. M. Hogan, Philada. Price - $275
1907 ATLANTIC NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN RAILWAY COMPANY - Incorporated Under the Laws of Iowa - Stock certificate issued to Theodore G. Steinke for 2 shares worth $100 each. ATLANTIC, IOWA printed beneath title and stamped into the corporate seal. Bull Elk vignette. In the early 1900s, this was the only farm-owned rail company in America. H. S. Rattenborg was the main promoter and general manager. The route ran from Atlantic to Kimballton, Iowa with a number of stops in between. The rail line was started to transport livestock and grain as well as passengers. Signed by James Stier as secretary and J. W. Cuykendall, company president.
